In 2016, Science20 (S20) comprising the national academies of the G20 countries was established in German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina during the German G20 Presidency(Hamburg Summit, Germany) in 2017, which is to provide science-based recommendations (joint statement) for G20 Summit.
As a result, in January 2017 in Halle (Saale) Germany, the writing meeting was held and the joint statement was presented by the national academies of the G20 countries, which is entitled as "Improving Global Health: Tools and Strategies to Combat Chronic and Communicable Diseases".
Leopoldina hosted the Science20 Dialogue Forum on 22 March 2017 in Halle (Saale), the statement was officially handed over to Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel.
In 2018, G20 summit was hosted in Argentina, therefore, National Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences took over the chair of S20 on 24th- 25th July. The theme was "Food and Nutrition Security: Improving Soils and Increasing Productivity", and the statement was handed over to Dr. Lino Barañao, Minister of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation.
In 2019, Japan will host the G20 Summit, which will be held on 28th-29th June 2019 in Osaka. Preceding the G20 summit, Science Council of Japan as the host academy of the next S20, will host the S20 Japan 2019 in Tokyo on 6th March. The theme of the S20 Japan 2019 is “Threats to Marine Ecosystems and Conservation of the Marine Environment –with Special Attention to Climate Change and Marine Plastic Waste”.
