Prof. Yamagiwa has been conducting research on the social structure and ecology of primates in the aim of finding the missing clues about Early Humans' society. He has been researching Japanese macaques since 1975, and gorillas in Africa since 1978. He served President of Primate Society of Japan, and President of International Primatological Society in consecutive years. He also participates in animal conservation project, such as Pole Pole Foundation in Democratic Republic of Congo that strives to acheive peaceful coexistance of humans and gorillas.
